We just built an IDF in a new building on our campus, and it came out really nice. Three 2-post racks, with 12' Vertical cable management. The leftmost rack is for A/V and MAN connections, the middle rack is for access-layer growth (currently unused), and the rightmost rack houses our 4510 and five 48-port angled patch panels. Patch panels are all together, with the 4510 at the bottom of the rack. Once we have everything dressed in and connected, I'll snap a couple pictures for you guys. This is going to be our new standard for 2-post IDF construction. It's really nice.

Angled patch panels in the top of the rack with switches in the lower half. Vertical finger wire managers down the sides of the racks, 8' wide on the ends and 12' between racks if we have the room. This isn't one of my closets but this is what our setup looks like.

We don't put in that big panduit pass through horizontal manager, we put in a smaller 2u one in the middle of the rack and one at the top of the rack. This setup handles density well, we can run 10 patch panels and 8 switches in the 1 rack.

I think it really depends on the switches jobs. External DMZ/HSRP/VRRP switches which only have a couple ethernets in them, maybe don't require an entire 1u or 2u patch or cable management above and below them. However, when you're talking about access switches, stacks of 5x48 ports, then fuck, you could go half one way, half the other way, no matter what in 5 years the shit is going to look like spaghetti. Unless you're the only network engineer, and you did the whole design/move/whatever, it'll look completely different in a few years. This is mainly access switches, core switches typically stay the same unless you get some idiot who cant figure shit out and you'll have a long ass blue cable hanging from the front of something.

At that point your port channels won't work and STP has been disabled.
