(1) it's better to type the number 3 1/2 in word, copy it and pase it in excel. right clicking a cell and changing it's category to a text it is a long process. (2) use ' (apostrophe) and type like this '3 1/2. Now double click the cell select number 1 hit ctrl+1, under effects option select superscript and hit ok.
