Can someone please point me to a Microsoft website, i.e., a website whose domain name ends in microsoft.com like this one that I am posting on (answers.microsoft.com), where I can find a complete up-to-date old-fashioned reference manual for Word 2016 which explains the details of the features in Word 2016 and the intended behaviour of those features. I am not talking about a user guide or the 'Tell me what you want to do' menu item or the File ? Menu item or the F1 help. I am looking for a reference manual which is searchable via a file viewer Find feature, preferrably an html or pdf file, and which has an index like any old-fashioned reference manual or reference book.

Alternatively since I have Office 2016 installed on my machine if there is a such a reference manual on my machine can someone please tell me how to locate it? I have searched online and on my machine and can find nothing like I describe.

Thanks very much in advance. That's an easy cop out because How Can I Find Out What I Don't Even Know? I want to know/learn what the capabilities of the program ARE!!!!

I want to know what the programmers have added, developed over years of work in order to bring the current version into being! If I don't know that word (for example) can help me edit a picture, I won't even search for it! If I don't know that Excel has intricate capabilities, how am I even going to venture into exploring them? If I'm writing a book and the programmers have built in features that makes writing a book easier, how will I know? I can't just ask for 'features for writing a book' and classify my ideas and topics! Such a query would lead down a rabbit hole. So, there has to be an online manual of chapters, lists, categories, subchapters that address various issues and by glancing through such a list we can explore the capabilities of the software instead of just limiting ourselves to what we see others doing! So, that is a MAJOR shortcoming of most softwares today and I'm very disappointed if MS does not have such a resource, at least online, for a users to rely on!

Good programs have such resources available for those who seek them! I understand it takes some effort to organize such a 'book' but I believe it is an obligation of MS to do it. Sorry but Doug is right, there is no such 'official' MS book as you are looking for. Yes it is a cop out, but not by Doug. MS copped out on producing documentation for all Office applications long ago. What you are looking for was known as a 'User Guide'. I have the MS User Guide for (Win) Word 6.0, 1994 (and a couple of earlier ones).

If it is not the last one, it is one of the last versions. Since MS abdicated it's responsibility to document it's programs it has depended on external experts to write the user guides. People like MVP Suzanne Barnes (sp?) who is a frequent replier on this forum, to name just one of the potential authors. Go to any large bookstore and you'll see a dozen or more titles for Word alone. From relatively short 'idiot' level books like the 'For Dummies.' Series up to tomes 1500 pages or more costing $50-100.

Spend some time browsing in a book store and pick one or two. Actually, the only at least semi official MS books I can think of would be the learning materials for the MOS, MS Office Specialist, certification training, ie Demonstrate your expertise with Microsoft Office! Designed to help you practice and prepare for the 2013 Word Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) exam, this all-in-one study guide features: Full, objective-by-objective exam coverage; Easy-to-follow procedures and illustrations to review essential skills; Hands-on practice tasks to apply what you've learned; files included; Online pre-test to assess your readiness. Use the in-depth exam prep, practice, and review to help advance your proficiency with Microsoft Office - and earn the credential that proves it!

There are a couple of simple realities to consider when buying 'User Guides' for Office programs. First, programs like Word, Excel and PowerPoint are incredibly complex. Years ago I saw articles documenting that these programs have each have over 1000 commands! The combinations and permutations and nuances of these commands simply incredible. Frankly, MS does not have the imagination to get the most out of their own programs. When you read what people have been able to do, the subtleties they have created you'll be amazed.

Second, change in these programs is very slow 'evolutionary' rather than 'revolutionary'. Some new commands are 'bolted on' with each release, and sometimes a few old ones are retired. Even the switch from the (superior) menu to the 'ribbon' was simply a case of 'putting lipstick on the pig'. They changed the 'shell' that accessed the underlying commands, but 99.9% of the commands were identical in the 2003 menu and 2007 ribbon versions! This means that if you get a good, detailed book for 2007 or 2010 (even 2003 or earlier!) (used but cheap!) you'll be able to learn 95-99% of what you need to know about the program. Then you just have to look up online articles detailing 'what's new' in each subsequent release. With that info you can lookup detailed online articles about any of the new features that interest you.

I've been using Word since 91 and every week I still learn something new about it. The online learning portion is especially significant for the 2016 version of Office 365. MS finally got serious about releasing new features to 365 starting with 2016. There are several quite significant new features as well as many rather trivial, or specialized, ones that are so new that they are ONLY documented online. Is the current 'official' MS site for learning about the applications.

I hope (but I'm not holding my breath) that over time MS will expand these documents to cover all functionality. The Office 365 roadmap takes you through the process of buying a 365 subscription key, installing and managing 365. It also includes leaning steps for some of the extra apps bundled with 365: Skype, OneDrive, (Both the consumer and business versions).

These 'quick starts' are as good a place as any learning about the applications. They are similar to the roadmaps: This 'What's New' page/site is where you can find out about the newly released 365 specific features: Printed Books about Word and Office Here are links to a random selection books about Word and Office. I have not read them, so I cannot recommend any one in particular. But the links will give you an idea of what is out there.
